Gelsenkirchen - FC Schalke 04 have signed former 1. FSV Mainz 05 goalkeeper Christian Wetklo on a one-year deal.

Back to his roots

Wetklo played his youth football at Schalke and returns to his boyhood club in a time of relative need. The Royal Blues' other summer goalkeeping recruit, Fabian Giefer, who arrived from Fortuna Düsseldorf in July, has been ruled out until October with an adductor muscle injury. Ralf Fahrmann will resume the number one position he occupied last season, while Wetklo becomes his number two.

The 34-year-old represented Mainz with distinction in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 between 2003 and 2014. The goalkeeping recruit will complete his first training session alongside fellow new signing Sidney Sam, and the club's talismanic striker .

Sam, a close season arrival from Bayer 04 Leverkusen, has overcome a calf injury, while Huntelaar has returned from his post-FIFA World Cup holiday, having helped the Netherlands to a third-place finish in Brazil.
