Wolfsburg - VfL Wolfsburg have confirmed that they will host reigning Spanish champions and UEFA Champions League finalists Club Atletico de Madrid in a pre-season friendly at the Volkswagen Arena.

'Top-quality opponent'

The date of the fixture has been set for 10 August 2014, two weeks before the start of the 52nd Bundesliga season on 22-24 August, but the exact kick-off time has yet to be finalised.

“We’re delighted we were able to reach an agreement with Atletico and that we’re able to offer fans in Wolfsburg and the surrounding area a real footballing treat,” said sporting director Klaus Allofs. “Atletico are one of the best teams in Europe and they’ll allow us to test ourselves against a top-quality opponent shortly before the start of the season.”

Atletico, who count former Wolves playmaker Diego among their playing staff, made waves across the continent in 2013/14 by beating FC Barcelona and city rivals Real Madrid CF to the league title for the first time since 1996. Under the guidance of coach Diego Simone they also reached the Champions League final, where they lost in extra time to Real.
