Gelsenkirchen - FC Schalke 04 have received a boost with news that captain is in contention to feature against VfL Wolfsburg at the weekend after missing the Matchday 18 win at Hamburger SV with a stomach bug.

'Can't wait to play'

The Germany international was a spectator in Schalke's 3-0 victory in the Imtech Arena, in which Klaas-Jan Huntelaar made a goalscoring return to the side after five months out injured.

Höwedes participated in full training with his team-mates on Wednesday and is now preparing to be involved in this weekend's home clash with fellow UEFA Champions League hopefuls Wolfsburg.

"I feel really good and I can't wait to be on the pitch in a competitive game again," the 25-year-old told schalke04.de. Höwedes had previously missed much of the team's preparations for the second half of the season because of a thigh injury sustained in early December.
