La Manga - Midfielder Ilkay Gündogan has left Borussia Dortmund's winter training camp prematurely and flown back to Germany due to illness.

A busy doctor indeed

Gündogan who had been sidelined and nurturing a back injury the past few months, was finally able to take part in training sessions in Spain. Unfortunately, he came down with bronchitis, so has been recovering in quarantine in his hotel room.

“Ilkay is already on the road to recovery. Seeing as he wouldn’t have taken part in team training here in Spain anyway, we decided together that he would fly back to Germany, where we can better cater to his medical needs,” said team doctor Dr. Markus Braun.

The doctor had his hands full on Wednesday as he also had to straighten Nuri Sahin’s nose, which the Turkish international had broken during the morning training session. As a result the 25-year-old has been banned from training until Friday.

Bumps and bruises

Furthermore, in the first few minutes of the friendly against German side VfL Bochum 1848, Sven Bender suffered a dead leg, but powered through to half time. In the afternoon Bender trained in the weight room alongside Sokratis, who has been labouring under the effects of a sore heel.
