Munich - FC Bayern München's midfield star Bastian Schweinsteiger has been dealt a blow with the news that he must undergo a second ankle operation.

'Really painful again'

The 29-year-old had surgery on his right ankle at the end of last season, but has been playing through pain ever since and now faces an indefinite spell on the sidelines.

Despite utilising intensive measures aimed at preventing the injury returning, FC Bayern club Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt observed that, "during check-ups with Bastian in recent weeks after the original operation, we have noticed that there was increasing hardening of soft tissue into a bonelike material."

"The last few weeks have been really painful for me again," added Schweinsteiger. "I've been really trying, but it's come to a point where surgery is the only option. I hope that I can be completely pain-free after going under the knife and just get back to playing football."
