Gelsenkirchen - FC Schalke 04 midfielder has travelled to Munich to receive "intensive conservative treatment" on his left knee, the club have announced.

Hanging in the balance

The Ghana international limped off in the 4-1 victory over FC Augsburg on Matchday 8 and it has been decided the 26-year-old will be treated by a specialist in the Bavarian capital in the coming days after tests had shown an irritation in his left knee. Initial treatment there has already shown positive effects.

It remains unclear whether the Berlin-born attacking midfielder, who has made a massive impact at Schalke since joining from AC Milan in the summer, will be fit in time for the Royal Blues' forthcoming Bundesliga outing away to cellar dwellers Eintracht Braunschweig as he will remain in Munich until the end of next week.

It has been confirmed, however, that Boateng will not be available for Ghana's FIFA 2014 World Cup play-off first leg against Egypt on Tuesday.
