Nuremberg - Makoto Hasebe has strengthened 1. FC Nürnberg by signing a three-year contract with the club, joining from Bundesliga rivals VfL Wolfsburg.

Experienced campaigner

The 29-year-old passed a medical in the Bavarian city on Sunday before putting pen to paper on his contract.

“After the surprise transfer of Timmy Simons, we thought a lot about how we could compensate for his loss,” said Nürnberg’s sporting director Martin Bader. “Makoto Hasebe was soon identified as a suitable solution. The reason it took so long is because he has such a high standing in Wolfsburg after six years there.”

Hasebe joined the Wolves in 2008 and won the Bundesliga title at the end of his first season there. As captain of the Japan national team, his experience will be crucial in helping lift Nürnberg after a difficult start to the season.

“Makoto is a player who brings leadership qualities with him and who has convinced us in terms of his character,” said Nürnberg coach Michael Wiesinger. “He knows the Bundesliga well and will help us immediately.”
