Gelsenkirchen - FC Schalke 04 have confirmed the signing of midfielder from Bundesliga 2 side 1. FC Köln.

’Enormous potential’

The 21-year-old, who recently appeared for Germany at the UEFA U-21 European Championships in Israel has signed a four-year deal at the Veltins Arena until June 2017 and will wear the number 11.

"Christian Clemens is a German U-21 international with enormous potential," commented Schalke sporting director Horst Heldt . "We are delighted that we have been able to tie down another talented and young German player to the club on a long-term contract. He is quick, has a strong shot, can play in various attacking positions and is a goal threat from wide areas as well from the centre.”

Clemens himself was equally pleased to be joining a club set to compete in the UEFA Champions League next season. "I had twelve great years in Cologne, but now I'm really looking forward to wearing the Royal Blue shirt," said the 22-year-old. "Schalke are one of the top clubs in Germany and a competitor in the Champions League. You don't get many opportunities in life as good as this."

Clemens joined Köln in 2001 and made his Bundesliga debut with the club at the age of 19 in September 2010. He made a total of 89 league appearances in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 for the Billy Goats, scoring 13 times.
