Munich - FC Bayern Munich defender has had successful surgery on his torn cruciate knee ligament. The 24-year-old Germany international was operated on by renowned sports injury specialist Dr. Richard Steadman in Colorado in the United States on Monday 20 May.

Ten months out

He was on the road to recovery from the original cruciate ligament tear, sustained in a league game against Borussia Dortmund in December, before suffering a major setback with an identical injury last week.

During the operation, the torn ligament was removed. When the scars from the previous operation heal over, a new artificial cruciate ligament can be inserted. In the meantime, Badstuber will resume physical therapy.

Early indications suggest that he will be out of action for a further ten months. While his career is not thought to be in serious danger, the German international faces a race to fit in time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
