Dortmund - Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski set a new club record on Matchday 26, scoring in his eighth consecutive Bundesliga outing as the champions steamrollered SC Freiburg.

In good company

"I guess I've re-written the BVB history books", the 51-time Poland international said after breaking the record of late Dortmund legend Timo Konietzka, the Bundesliga's first-ever Bundesliga goalscorer in 1964/65, who went on a run of notching in seven games in a row that season.

The 24-year-old is now one of only five players to have scored in at least eight consecutive domestic matches, his brace in the comeback against Freiburg putting him level with former FC Bayern Munich and Netherlands striker Roy Makaay and Greek forward Theofanis Gekas (VfL Bochum, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Hertha BSC and Eintracht Frankfurt). He is also now halfway towards matching the lofty numbers posted by now-VfL Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs and all-time Bundesliga top scorer Gerd Müller, who struck a staggering ten and 16 times in a row respectively.

"It's just fantastic", Dortmund head coach Jürgen Klopp said even before his in-form number nine drew level with Konietzka, praising the striker's latest hot streak which has now seen him score ten goals in his last eight matches and shoot to the top of the goalscoring charts. "Robert is in a rich vein of form," he added.

Further goals

Lewandowski's current run is a far cry from his debut season at the club in 2010 when he found the net just eight times, but Klopp kept faith with his Lech Poznan acquisition and is being paid back by the bucket-load, with the prolific marksman notching 26 goals in 36 matches this season alone.

Lewandowski is yet to end a domestic campaign on top of the scorers' chart in either Poland's Ekstraklasa or Germany's Bundesliga, but with a three-goal advantage over his nearest challengers in the current standings, that could all change come May.
