Gelsenkirchen - FC Schalke 04 have extended the contract of 23-year-old defensive midfielder Marco Höger until 2016.

”Really happy at Schalke”

Höger's contract was originally due to expire in 2014. "We're delighted to have tied a young player to the club long term who is already an important player for us and is still developing," said sporting director Horst Heldt, full of praise for the youngster.

Höger moved to the Royal Blues from then-Bundesliga 2 side Alemannia Aachen in 2011, following the same route paved by Lewis Holtby before him, and he has featured in 34 Bundesliga matches since, scoring two and creating five goals.

"I feel really happy at Schalke and I'm delighted to continue being a part of this great club over the next few years," Höger said.
