Munich - 1860 Munich have announced their decision to release head coach Reiner Maurer as a result of recent sporting developments.

Two stints

Alexander Schmidt will take over first-team duties in the meantime. The 44-year-old coach has been working with the club's Under-21 side since the start of this season having previously operated as first-team assistant in the 2011/12 campaign.

Maurer, who scored eight times in over 140 appearances for the Lions during the latter stages of his professional career, had been enjoying his second stint as 1860 Munich's head coach having previously held the position between 2004 and 2006.
