Hoffenheim - 1899 Hoffenheim midfielder Boris Vukcevic's condition is no longer life-threatening, the club have announced.

Babbel "delighted"

The Heidelberg hospital in which the 22-year old is being treated for injuries sustained in a road accident has revealed the Germany Under-21 international has survived the acute phase and, while he remains in a coma, his condition is now stable. A further prognosis is not possible at this time.

"We're delighted for Boris and his family about the news," commented Hoffenheim coach Markus Babbel. "We'd all hoped and prayed he'd make it. We know there's a long way to go yet, but this news gives us strength and will help us get through what is a difficult time. It will help us focus on our upcoming tasks in the Bundesliga."

Following forensic tests, local authorities revealed on Friday that the 22-year-old had low blood-sugar levels at the time of the crash.

Horror crash

Vukcevic was on his way to training on 28 September when his car careered into an oncoming lorry at a motorway exit, leaving him with severe head injuries.

"We are in close contact with the doctors treating Boris and his family," said Hoffenheim sporting director Andreas Müller. "The situation remains troubling, but we're all confident he can pull through."

The club have refused to make any official comment on the cause of the crash.
