SC Freiburg sealed an instant return to the Bundesliga after a 2-1 win at struggling SC Paderborn 07 took them ten points clear of third-placed 1. FC Nürnberg on Friday.
Second-bottom Paderborn showed no intention of rolling over to the league leaders early on, and they matched Christian Streich's side with a spirited display in the first half. Their resistance was broken within seconds of the restart, however, as Mike Frantz clipped in the opener before Nils Petersen punished a defensive error to net his 21st goal of the campaign.
Moritz Stoppelkamp halved the deficit with a well-taken strike following Alexander Schwolow's scuffed clearance, but though Pascal Stenzel was sent off for the visitors for two bookings, Paderborn could not turn their pressure into an equaliser, despite striking the woodwork on numerous occasions.
