Bobby Wood had the home fans on their feet after just five minutes, although his goal was ruled out for offside. The hosts came close again ten minutes later with Steven Skrzybski's effort turned onto the crossbar by Sandhausen goalkeeper Marco Knaller. Another deflection, this one an unintentional one off the head of Tim Kister, sent Skrzybski’s effort off target as the sides went in at the break level.

Sandhausen got into the game better in the second half, but just when it looked like they had tamed their hosts, Union struck. Dennis Daube it was who tried his luck from long range, sending his shot in off the inside of the post with Knaller's dive unable to reach it with just 14 minutes left, securing Union a crucial three points.
