The hosts dominated the opening exchanges, but were unable to make the most of the opportunities that fell their way. Norman Theuerkauf's header flew just past the upright, before Andreas Voglsammer failed to hit the target with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Dennis Grote and Kingsley Onuegbu both spurned glorious opportunities to give MSV the lead in the second half, and the visitors paid dearly for their profligacy when Tim Starke turned home Smail Morabit's cross to seal the points for Heidenheim.
