Leipzig - Bundesliga 2 promotion hopefuls RB Leipzig have parted ways with head coach Alexander Zorniger by mutual consent, the club announced on Wednesday.

The decision comes following a 2-0 loss to Saxon rivals FC Erzgebirge Aue in the opening game of the second half of the season. Aiming to secure back-to-back promotions to play their way into Germany's top flight, Leipzig currently find themselves five points adrift of the top three. Youth coach Achim Beierlorzer will assume first-team duties on an interim basis.

Zorniger has left a lasting legacy at the club having guided Leipzig to two promotions and 62 wins in 101 appearances since taking over the Eastern German outfit in 2012. "Alex has done exceptional work here and was extremely successful with the side during his two and a half years here," said sporting director Ralf Rangnick. "He played a major part in us currently playing in Bundesliga 2."
