Bochum - Mikael Forssell’s injury-time strike rescued VfL Bochum a dramatic 1-1 draw at home to SV Darmstadt 98 on the opening day of Matchday 10.

The home side looked the more dominant at the Rewirpowerstadion, bossing possession against a deep-lying Darmstadt, but it was the visitors that took the lead ten minutes into the game, defender Romain Bregerie scoring with a deflected header. Clear-cut chances remained few and far between, though, with Darmstadt’s stubborn defence largely restricting Bochum to long-range attempts.

Yusuke Tasaka was at the heart of most of VfL’s promising action, 98 custodian Christian Mathenia twice denying the Japanese midfielder, but the hosts’ pressure finally paid off when former Finland international Forssell stabbed in from a knockdown by his own keeper Andreas Luthe, sending Peter Neururer’s charges into ecstasy.
