Bochum - Three points proved elusive for early front-runners VfL Bochum 1848 and Karlsruher SC as both preserved their unbeaten starts to the current campaign with a 1-1 draw on Friday evening.

Neither side wasted any time in trying to break the deadlock, but it was the visitors who profited from the end-to-end pace of proceedings when Manuel Torres, on loan from FC Schalke 04, headed home with just under 20 minutes played. Ilian Micanski should have doubled the lead soon after, but failed to beat Michael Esser at his back post.

It was a missed chance that came back to haunt Karlsruher soon after half-time when Simon Terrode, unable to add to his six-goal tally for this season, found an unmarked Yusuke Tasaka at the back post just past the hour mark. However, neither side was able to produce a winner as Micanski and Bochum’s new recruit Mikael Forssell both spurned chances in the closing stages to ensure the spoils were shared.
