Darmstadt - 21 years on from their last appearance, SV Darmstadt 98 made a winning return to Germany's second tier as they picked up a narrow 1-0 win over ten-man SV Sandhausen.

Both sides took time to brush off the summer cobwebs and, though the hosts enjoyed the better of the play for large periods, clear-cut chances proved to be at a premium in the opening half an hour. However, when handed the opportunity to take the lead, Darmstadt duly obliged when Dominik Stroh-Engel converted from the spot after Timo Achenbach had been sent off for handling on the line.

Despite boasting a man advantage, the Lillies were forced to rely on set-pieces as they looked to extend their lead with Roman Bregerie's headed effort drawing a strong save out of Manuel Riemann, who had denied Maurice Exslager just moments before. With time winding down, Sandhausen threw caution to the wind, making two attacking changes and almost grabbing an equaliser through Aziz Bouhaddouz, but it wasn't enough to prevent Darmstadt picking up all three points at the end of a competitive encounter.
