Heidenheim - Making their Bundesliga 2 debut, reigning third tier champions 1. FC Heidenheim got their campaign off to a near-perfect start as they collected a 2-1 win on home soil against ten-men FSV Frankfurt on Sunday afternoon.

Nerves got the better of the newly-promoted side during the opening exchanges as the visitors fired themselves into the lead when Jan Zimmermann spilled Vincenzo Grifo’s deflected free-kick, allowing Björn Schlicke to prod home from close range. However, the hosts recovered well to level the scores going in at the break as captain Marc Schnatterer producing a tidy near-post finish from Florian Niederlechner’s cut back.

Frankfurt’s hopes of getting their season off to a winning start were dealt a cruel blow just four minutes after the interval when Manuel Konrad picked up a second bookable offence. Heidenheim looked to press their advantage, but had to bide their time as second-half substitute Patrick Mayer finally made the hosts’ pressure tell, securing all three points for the 13/14 Dritte Liga champions courtesy of his 84th-minute strike.
