Munich - TSV 1860 Munich have reacted to their 3-0 defeat to Karlsruher SC by relieving coach Friedhelm Funkel of his duties with immediate effect.

The 60-year-old, who last week announced he would be stepping down at the end of the season, has had that contract termination brought forward six weeks in the wake of a result which all but ends any lingering hopes the Lions had of catching the top three this season.

With five games of the campaign remaining, 1860 are 11 points behind third-placed SC Paderborn 07 and the attention will now turn to planning for a more successful push for promotion next term.

Funkel's assistant Markus von Ahlen has been placed in temporary charge of the first team until further notice.
