Munich - Friedhelm Funkel will be stepping down as head coach of TSV 1860 Munich at the end of the current season.

In a statement, the club said intensive talks had revealed a disparity between the conceptual approach of the board and management and that of the coach. “We therefore came to the consensual decision to terminate our working relationship,” explained 1860 president Gerhard Mayrhofer.

Managing director Markus Rejek added that the parting of ways would also offer an opportunity “to adopt a sporting concept that reflects the identity of 1860 Munich. We want to reinvigorate our fans and sponsors.” TSV, whom Funkel joined last September, are currently mid-table, eleven points shy of the promotion play-off place.
