Berlin - 1. FC Union Berlin kept their flickering promotion hopes alive with a 2-0 victory at home to Energie Cottbus in Monday's Matchday 28 curtain-closer.

The hosts dominated the match from start to finish and should have won by a far greater margin after squandering a hatful of goalscoring chances. Cottbus had rallied in recent matches to spark optimism that they might move off the foot of the table, but the East Germans were completely overrun in the capital. Sören Brandy scored a goal in each half for Union, with each effort coming about as a result of the visitors' defensive failings. The result leaves the Cottus stranded four points off the relegation play-off spot and ten away from outright safety.
