Cottbus - FC Energie Cottbus recorded their first league win since 27 September after Sven Michel’s sensational strike saw the hosts take all three points against promotion-chasing Kaiserslautern.

Cottbus parted ways with Stephan Schmidt as head coach this week, so it was left to assistant coach Jörg Böhme to take charge of the team, and the former Germany international saw his players make the perfect start when Michel drilled in a swerving shot from range just three minutes in. Lautern dominated possession thereafter, but couldn’t make any inroads into the home defence, with strikers Srdjan Lakic and Karim Matmour seeing little of the ball.

The frustration continued for the 1998 Bundesliga winners after the break, with Mohamadou Idrissou wasting a golden chance to level in injury time. Energie thus cut the deficit to the relegation play-off place to five points, while Lautern are the same margin away from the automatic promotion places.
