Kaiserslautern - Promotion hopefuls 1. FC Kaiserslautern got off to the perfect start in 2014 courtesy of a hard-fought 2-1 win over second-placed Greuther Fürth.

In a first-half that boasted few clear-cut chances for either side, it was the Red Devils who had posed the greater threat throughout, having engineered a slight advantage in the midfield battle. As a result the hosts were rewarded for their efforts shortly before half-time when Ruben Jenssen picked up the loose ball just outside the area, before curling a sumptuous shot into the top corner.

Keen to press their advantage after the break the hosts struck again approaching the hour-mark as Florian Dick produced a wonder goal of his own, cutting in from the right before firing into the far corner. Fürth kept things insteresting when substitute Ognjen Mudrinski found the back of the net 12 minutes from time, but with Niclas Füllkrug's deflected effort dopping just wide of the post in the dying moments, the Clovers Leaves failed to prevent Kaiserslautern closing the gap between the two sides to just one point.
