Hamburg - In an intense encounter, which produced no less than seven yellow cards, FC St. Pauli began their push for promotion on the opening Friday evening fixture of the campaign with a win over TSV 1860 Munich thanks to a late goal from Lennart Thy.

The hosts were quick to get out of the blocks as they sought to put 1860 on the back foot and created many of the opening chances, with Christopher Nöthe going closest with a header that drifted just past the post. Having survived the early barrage, Munich grew in confidence and almost took the lead on the stroke of half time when Christopher Schindler’s effort was blocked on the line by Marc Rzatkowski. The Lions picked up where they left off after the break, setting the tone and dictating proceedings, but their inability to produce any clear-cut chances was punished by Thy, who beat Gabor Kiraly from range with ten minutes remaining, handing the hosts all three points.
