Cottbus - 1. FC Kaiserslautern failed to take strides away from 1. FC Köln in the chase for the Bundesliga 2 promotion play-off berth as they were beaten by FC Energie Cottbus 4-2 at the Stadion der Freundschaft.

Ivica Banovic’s penalty put the hosts on their way to victory and, although Mohamadou Idrissou headed the Red Devils level, Boubacar Sanogo soon restored Cottbus’ lead before Andre Fomitschow made it three. Albert Bunjaku made it interesting with a late penalty, but Sanogo struck again to seal the points.

The win consolidates Cottbus’ eighth position, but dents Kaiserslautern’s promotion hopes. With Köln held by 1860 Munich on Sunday, they could have opened up a four-point cushion with three games to go with victory. Instead, they are just one point clear with FSV Frankfurt still in the hunt a point further behind.
