Eriksson turns Lions down

Former England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson has opted not to join the Lions coaching staff

Munich - Sven-Göran Eriksson will not become the next coach of 1860 Munich after turning down the Bundesliga 2 club's offer on Friday.

Sven-Göran Eriksson had been in negotiations with the Lions for some time, but after a meeting with club executive Robert Schäfer in London on Tuesday, he requested time to consider the offer.

Change of heart

Upon reflection though, the former coach of the England national team has opted to decline 1860's offer. Schäfer, who led the negotiations for the Munich club, said: "We spoke at length and in depth about the club and the second division. Furthermore, we made considerations to how the coaching team could look in practice."

The 64-year-old requested time to consider the offer only to inform Schäfer in a telephone call on Friday that he would not be accepting. "Since the first contact with the club last November, a fair bit of time has passed and we all know how quick-moving the professional football business is," said Eriksson in a statement. "I therefore would like to ask all concerned to respect my decision. I wish my friend (and 1860 executive) Hasan Ismaik and TSV 1860 Munich much success in the future."

Alexander Schmidt therefore remains in his role as 1860's head coach.
