Hamburg - VfL Wolfsburg have been dealt a major blow ahead of the upcoming campaign with the news that attacking midfielder Ivan Perisic is to undergo an operation on a fractured shoulder.
Croatia international Perisic suffered the injury in Saturday’s defeat to FC Bayern München in the Telekom Cup, with tests on Monday revealing the full extent of the damage. The 25-year-old, who is expected to be out for up to twelve weeks, joins defensive trio Felipe Lopes, Patrick Ochs and Christian Träsch on the Wolfsburg treatment table.
“These injuries are very unfortunate, but we have a large squad which helps us cope with all the absentees,” said sporting director Klaus Allofs. “The most important thing is that our injured players have a smooth recovery and return to the first-team fold as soon as possible."
Featuring in all but one of Wolfsburg’s league matches last season, former Borussia Dortmund star Perisic bagged ten goals as Dieter Hecking’s charges narrowly missed out on qualification for the UEFA Champions League. His club form earned him a place in Croatia’s squad for the 2014 World Cup, but despite scoring twice in Brazil, the Vatreni failed to progress beyond the group stage.
