Hunt swaps Werder for Wolfsburg

  • Aaron Hunt joined Werder Bremen's youth ranks back in 2001
  • In the season just ended, he scored seven goals and laid on nine more in 31 starting appearances
  • Hunt also earned himself a fair play award by convincing referee Manuel Gräfe to overturn a penalty decision after he tripped inside the box in the Matchday 24 game at Nürnberg

Wolfsburg - VfL Wolfsburg have strengthened their midfield ranks for the coming season by signing Aaron Hunt from SV Werder Bremen on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old, a veteran of 215 Bundesliga appearances for Bremen, in which he hit the net 46 times, lifted the DFB Cup with Werder in 2009 and also brings the experience of 49 games on the European stage, as well as three senior appearances for Germany, to his new club.

Hecking: 'Genuine goal threat'

“We're delighted Aaron Hunt's chosen to come here. He's convinced about Wolfsburg's project and wants to take the next step in his career with VfL. Even though he's 27 and already vastly experienced, Aaron's a top-level player with the potential to develop even further,” said VfL sporting director Klaus Allofs.

For his part, head coach Dieter Hecking noted, “Aaron's a real all-rounder who can fill just about any position in the middle of the park, as well as posing a genuine scoring threat. He's exactly the type of player we were looking for. On top of that, he's got a lot of games under his belt, both in the Bundesliga and international competitions. That's valuable experience to add to our young team.”

Fresh challenge

The new signing himself said: “Wolfsburg offers me a great opportunity to carry on playing at the top level. I was at Bremen a long time, achieved a lot and had some incredible years there, but the time had come to try something new. I'm really looking forward to meeting my new team-mates, and to the challenges awaiting me in Wolfsburg.”
