Player of the season

Philipp Lahm (r.) has continued to set the highest standards for Bayern this season, even in an unorthodox role of defensive midfield

Munich - Pep Guardiola struggled to find fitting superlatives when speaking about FC Bayern München’s captain Philipp Lahm this season, but one particular quote stands out as high praise indeed for the Munich-born defensive stalwart. “He is the most intelligent player I have ever coached,” said the Spaniard.

It is Lahm’s footballing brain, as well as his unquestioned talent, that allowed him to move away from his customary spot at right-back and into a holding midfield position this term, where he adapted seamlessly to become the pivot of the record-title holders’ midfield, scoring once, providing four assists and playing in 28 games, as the Bavarians clinched a domestic double, winning a 23rd Bundesliga title in record time as well as the DFB Cup in Berlin.
