Schweinsteiger closing in on return to first-team training

Bastian Schweinsteiger has kicked a ball for the first time since undergoing an ankle operation last year

Doha - FC Bayern München midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has stepped up his return to full fitness at the Bavarians' mid-season training camp in Doha.

The 29-year-old, who underwent an operation on his left ankle in November, kicked a ball for the first time since Matchday 12's victory over 1899 Hoffenheim, and even took part in a tactical exercise with the rest of the Bayern first team. Schweinsteiger spent the rest of Tuesday's session working individually with fitness coach Andreas Kornmayer.

'Not too much longer'

"I am able to do the exercises I'm instructed to do very well," Bayern's vice captain told fcbayern.de. "I am confident it won't take too much longer. I have to be patient and take things one step at a time. I'm happy with the way things are going and hope they'll continue to improve."

Schweinsteiger is confident of being fit for Bayern's first match of the 2013/14 Rückrunde against Borussia Mönchengladbach on 24 January.
