FC Bayern membership smashes the 200,000 barrier

Out in force: FC Bayern's success last season did the club's membership numbers no harm at all

Munich - The records keep on tumbling. As well as racking up an unprecedented Bundesliga, DFB Cup and UEFA Champions League treble last season, FC Bayern Munich added almost 30 thousand new club members to their ranks.

Going into the Uli Hoeneß Cup against FC Barcelona on Wednesday evening (24 July), the official membership stood at 217,241, making FC Bayern the first German club to break the 200,000 "barrier."

Hoeneß: "Extremely proud"

To mark the milestone, the entire FC Bayern Munich board welcomed six lucky new members onto the pitch at the Allianz Arena during the half-time break in the meeting with Barcelona and allocated them the membership numbers 199,997-199,999 and 200,001-200,003, along with a personalised scarf and member's badge. The number 200,000 has not been assigned.

"FC Bayern are extremely proud of having been able to record such a sensational rise in member numbers inside the space of a year," club president Uli Hoeneß said; "If it continues like this, the club is only a short step away from having the largest membership worldwide."

(Portuguese record champions S.L. Benfica list their current membership at 224,000.)
