Munich - FC Bayern Munich have been boosted by the news that midfielder Mario Götze has resumed running in his bid to recover from a groin injury, while team-mate and fellow Germany international Bastian Schweinsteiger is also making good progress on an ankle complaint.

On Tuesday 9 July Götze returned to Munich from the club’s training camp in Trentino, Italy, but underwent a scan on his groin a day later, after which he was able to partake in running activities. “The recovery is looking very, very good,” said the recent arrival from Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Sammer pleased

Sporting director Matthias Sammer was delighted that the 21-year-old was nearing a return to full fitness. “Mario’s recovery is going according to plan. We’re very happy.” Schweinsteiger is also on a “very good path and should return to team training next week”, according to the 1996 UEFA European Champion.

The Bavarians' first competitive game of the new season is the Supercup against Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park on 27 July, followed by a trip to BSV Schwarz-Weiß Rehden in the first round of the DFB Cup. Bayern then kick off the new Bundesliga season at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach on 9 August.
