Blaszczykowski signs five-year Dortmund deal

  • Jakub Blaszczykowski has committed himself to a new five-year contract with Borussia Dortmund
  • In six years since joining the club, the 60-time Polish international has developed into a "cornerstone" of the team
  • The 27-year-old has scored 25 goals and created a further 41 in 168 appearances for the Westphalians

Dortmund - Borussia Dortmund have kitted out midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski with a new five-year contract, tying him down until 2018.

The 27-year-old Polish national team captain, who has made 168 Bundesliga appearances to date, scoring 25 goals and setting up a further 41, put pen to paper on the new deal on Monday.

’Important cornerstone’

He follows the examples of Sven Bender, Neven Subotic and Roman Weidenfeller in committing his long-term future to the beaten UEFA Champions League finalists. “Kuba is an important cornerstone of our side, both sportingly and as a person,” said BVB sporting director Michael Zorc. “He was a sensation throughout Europe last season and we’re delighted to be able to build a long-term future with him.”

Blaszczykowski, or ‘Kuba’ for short, joined Dortmund in 2007 from Wisla Krakow, and now feels more than at home in the city. “When my contract's up, I'll be able to look back on over a decade with BVB,” he reflected; “That's a long time in professional football nowadays.

Proud Pole

“It makes me extremely proud that a big club like Borussia Dortmund have shown such faith in me and are planning ahead long term with me. I've long felt this is my second home,” added the 60-time Polish international.

Meanwhile, Dortmund have confirmed that Daniel Ginczek, who scored 18 goals in 31 Bundesliga 2 games for St. Pauli while on loan during the 2012/13, has moved to 1. FC Nuremberg. "We wish Daniel all the best," said Zorc.
