DOST DELIVERS IN BREMEN DRAW

VfL Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost (l.) netted his fifth Bundesliga goal of the campaign to deny ten-man Werder Bremen all three points

Wolfsburg - VfL Wolfsburg made use of their numerical advantage in a tempestuous 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen at the VW-Arena on Saturday.

Werder were crusing after Marko Arnautovic handed the visitors a deserved first-half lead, but Lukas Schmitz' sending off turned the tie the way of Wolfsburg, who levelled through in-form Bas Dost.

Arnautovic to the fore

Against the backdrop of new Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs taking his place in the dugout for the visit of former club Bremen, the two sides took to the field in somewhat tentative fashion. The visitors showed a marginally greater attacking threat early on, with Arnautovic teeing up Nils Petersen for the afternoon’s first effort on goal.

Wolfsburg sprung to life ten minutes before the break as Dost rose unchallenged to direct a downward header onto the foot of the post, but in Arnautovic, Bremen had a man very much in the mood and it was no surprise to see the livewire Austrian help himself to the opener, after some fine wing play from Eljero Elia.

Man down

Thomas Schaaf's men appeared to be in control, but a second yellow card to Lukas Schmitz changed the face of the game with half an hour to go, and Wolfsburg took full advantage as Dost bagged his fifth of the campaign.

Diego saw a close-range effort cleared off the line moments later, but it was Aaron Hunt who went closest to winning it for the away side, with his free kick coming back off the upright late on.
