1. FSV Mainz 05 rewarded themselves for two solid seasons in the Bundesliga with a brand new stadium in 2011, the splendid Coface Arena.
A considerable upgrade from their former Stadion am Bruchweg, the new ground houses 34,000 fans, some 20,000 of whom are seated. The stadium has an 'English-style' design - "just what we were after", according to club president Harald Strutz.
There was plenty of attention to detail during the construction, with Strutz proudly pointing out that "the players have to feel good here, so we made sure we got the changing rooms right. Every player has plenty of room to put his stuff and even his own plug socket."
After a friendly tournament involving FC Bayern Munich, Hamburger SV and Borussia Dortmund, the first competitive goal at the Arena was scored by Tunisian international frontman Sami Allagui as Mainz got Bundesliga buiness at their new home under way with a 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on the opening day of the 2011/12 season.
