  • The Frenchman, who won the quadruple with the Bavarians last season, was delighted to win the award...
  • ...and wasted little time in thanking everyone who had played their part in him being recognised for his exploits

Monaco - FC Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery has been named the 2012/13 UEFA European Footballer of the Year.

The French international beat off competition from FC Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Real Madrid CF's Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Really pleased"

The 30-year-old, who spearheaded the Bavarians sensational campaign that yielded four trophies last season, including the UEFA Champions League title with victory over Borussia Dortmund, admitted his delight at winning the award.

"I'm really pleased to have won this award here today. It's a very special moment for me. I'd like to thank my team-mates, FC Bayern and the fans, as well as my family and my children. It caps off a perfect year for me"

High praise

Ribery was nothing short of inspirational for the Bavarians last season, scoring ten goals and assisting a further 15 in the Bundesliga, whilst providing a driving force through the campaign.

All of which earned him a glowing report from FC Bayern legend Franz Beckenbauer. "If one player earned this award this year, then it was Franck Ribery. Franck was not only the best player on the best team, he won everything there was to win with the best team," said Beckenbauer talking to Sky Sports News HD. "It logical that he received the recognition. I believe he'll be brimming with confidence when he plays now. He's a very proud Frenchman and the award will do him a world of good. Maybe we'll even see him step up his performances even further!"
